The story behind The Vegan Sheep
The Vegan Sheep is a newly created concept with the aim to raise awareness about sustainability in the fashion industry. The Vegan sheep includes an all-digital auto-rating system for sustainable products, and some cool, fresh and carefully designed icons. The concept behind The Vegan Sheep is based on the Cotton as the symbol of sustainable. Cotton is a soft and fluffy fibre that grows in a plant, and currently is the most used natural fiber cloth in the fashion industry. The second most used fibre is a synthetic fibre, the Polyester. A story with a bit of history….
The earliest evidence of use of the cotton by the humankind dated 5500BC, and ever since, it has been used and frecuently mentioned in literature until today’s massive adoption by the clothing industry, thanks to the large production areas and the low cost. During the late medieval period, cotton became known as an imported fiber in northern Europe, without any knowledge of how it was derived, other than that it was a plant. Because Herodotus had written in his Histories, Book III, 106, that in India trees grew in the wild producing wool, it was assumed that the plant was a tree, rather than a shrub. This aspect is retained in the name for cotton in several Germanic languages, such as German Baumwolle, which translates as "tree wool" (Baum means "tree"; Wolle means "wool”). The Vegan Sheep adopts its name and its symbol designs based on this dual concept of a merge between the vegetal and the organic world.
